Joanna Marsh’s orchestral work Kahayla was commissioned to celebrate the building of the Burj Khalifa in 2009 and reflects on Dubai’s cultural identity both in the design and the musical content. The picture of the Burj Khalifa is created from the musical score which begins at the tip of the building and ends at the bottom and should be read horizontally. Joanna chose to call the piece Kahayla after the Arabian horse bloodline and the music is inspired by horseracing, filled with anticipation and excitement. The piece was first played in Dubai on the 1 st January 2015 by the Welsh National Opera to celebrate the 20 th edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival.
